MME Alerts
As part of the initiative to combat the opioid crisis in the US, there was a commitment to implement a range of opioid-related alerts in our EHRs. One of these alerts involved the calculation of a patient's daily morphine milligram equivalent (MME) to determine their risk level for opioid addiction and overdose.
MME is calculated based on the highest possible dose of all opioid medications per the CDC. This is further broken down into varying levels of urgency.
Incomplete Sig
The MME value is unknown due to an incomplete sig (medication instructions). The provider is asked to enter the missing sig information to resolve the issue and get an accurate MME calculation.
Clicking "Enter missing sig" will send the provider to prescription with the incomplete sig, allowing them to fill in the missing information.
Expanded Alert
The alert can be expanded to see additional relevant details such as the list of medications affecting the total MME value, their individual MME value and conversion factor.
From this expanded view a provider can additionally access individual medication's prescription for editing purposes by clicking on the prescription name.
